Description
Glasson Bridge is a bridge over a canal that later served as a railway bridge, built between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal. It underwent additions in 1853 and 1854 for the Port Carlisle Dock and Railway Company. The bridge is constructed from squared and coursed red and calciferous sandstone and features a cast-iron parapet. The plinth has rounded corners and was originally the supporting structure for a canal drawbridge, which was raised to convert the bridge for railway use. The Port Carlisle branch was closed in 1932.
