Description
Kelter The Golf Hotel, formerly known as The Solway Hotel, is a hotel and shop located on Criffel Street in Silloth, built in the early 1860s. The building features painted stucco with a string course and a moulded cornice set on a broad painted plinth. It has a Welsh slate roof with a shaped raised gable and stucco chimney stacks. The structure is two storeys high with an attic and consists of ten bays, with five bays on the Eden Street facade.
The hotel entrance, dating from the 20th century, is in a round-headed moulded arch beneath a tented lead hood. There are barred cellar windows, and the ground floor has single-pane sash windows set in chamfered surrounds. The first floor features sash windows with glazing bars in chamfered stucco surrounds, along with flat and gabled dormer windows. The five bays on the left have tripartite sash windows flanking single-pane sash windows, and there is a panelled door to the left. The extreme left of the ground floor has a 20th-century shop window and entrance.
On the first floor, three canted bay windows alternate with sash windows in pilaster surrounds, and there is a patterned cast iron balcony that is broken by the bay windows. The building has an open balustraded parapet and gabled dormer windows. A similar hotel entrance is present on Eden Street, with first floor sash windows featuring glazing bars and two-pane attic sash windows under a pedimented cornice adorned with urn finials on pilaster strips.
