Description
Silloth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of Christ Church on Criffel Street in Silloth, Cumbria. It is prominently placed by the low wall of the churchyard, facing the sea. The memorial features a small cross pattee made of Balmoral granite, which sits atop a tapering hexagonal shaft with an elaborate moulded foot. This shaft is supported by a tall hexagonal plinth and a two-tiered moulded base. On the front face, there is a relief carving of a crown next to the word “Liberty.”
The memorial is enclosed by very low rails and further surrounded by low iron posts and chains. The plinth is inscribed with incised and blacked lettering that reads: LIBERTY// TRUTH// RIGHT// TO THE/ GLORIOUS DEAD/ IN HONOUR AND/ LOVING APPRECIATION/ OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ AND/ 1939 – 1945/ "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND/ WE FOR ENGLAND DIED."/ "THEY WERE A WALL/ UNTO US, BOTH BY/ NIGHT AND BY DAY."/ 1ST SAML XXV.16// (NAMES).
