Description

This is a row of twelve three-storey properties situated on the north side of Market Place. The buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are constructed of stone, with some areas stuccoed and cemented, and feature quoins and slate roofs. Number 16 has a balustraded parapet. The Ship Inn, at number 14, has a decorative dentil cornice above the first floor and at eaves level. The majority of the windows are sash windows set in moulded stone frames. The premises previously occupied by Castle Studios, likely at number 22, is said to contain a good staircase. The listed buildings form a group with those on Kirkgate Corner, St Helens Street, numbers 30 and 30A Market Place, and numbers 2 to 10 (even) and 1 to 13 (odd) Castlegate.
