Description

This is a short, late-Georgian style terrace of three 3-storey houses situated on a corner site, comprising numbers 50 and 52 Castle Street and 2 Steeple Lane. The houses have pebble-dashed walls above a freestone plinth, with ashlar quoins, and a slate roof with roughcast, brick, and pebble-dashed stacks.

Numbers 50 and 52 Castle Street are two-bay houses. Number 50 has a moulded doorcase, a recessed door consisting of two round-headed panels and an overlight, and a 12-pane horned sash window beneath an entablature with a dentilled cornice. A 2-light oriel window is located in the middle storey. Other windows have smooth-rendered architraves and raised bands, and the upper storey features a 9-pane sash window. Number 52 has a painted freestone surround to a 6-panel door with a plain overlight. Its windows are 12-pane hornless sashes in the lower and middle storeys, with a shorter 9-pane sash window in the upper storey.

Number 2 Steeple Lane has a single bay facing Castle Street, featuring a 12-pane hornless sash window in the lower storey, a 2-light oriel window in the middle storey, and a shorter 9-pane hornless sash window in the upper storey. The Steeple Lane elevation has a 4-panel door and a 12-pane hornless sash window to the left. A replacement stair window is positioned in the upper left corner. At the rear, Number 2 Steeple Lane has several small sash windows above a single-storey lean-to. Number 52 Castle Street has hornless small-pane and replacement sashes at the rear, while Number 50 Castle Street has an added rear wing. The building forms part of a group including numbers 50-52 Castle Street and 2 Steeple Lane.
