Description

The Canal Aqueduct, built between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal, later served as a railway bridge. It is constructed of brick with red sandstone coping and features two small round brick arches. On the seaward side, there are plank doors designed to prevent sea water from entering French Creek. The structure has broadly spaced serpentine curved parapets. After the canal's closure in 1853, it was converted for railway use and remained operational until the Silloth Branch closed in 1964.
