Description

Dykesfield Bridge is a bridge over a canal that later became a railway bridge, built between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal. It underwent additions in 1853 and 1854 for the Port Carlisle Dock and Railway Company. The bridge is constructed from squared and coursed red and calciferous sandstone, featuring a cast-iron central parapet supported by wooden pillars. The plinth has rounded corners and was originally the supporting structure for a canal drawbridge. The bridge was raised in height when it was converted to a railway bridge after the canal closed.
