Description
The Scotby War Memorial, built in 1920, is made of red sandstone. It is designed in the style of a medieval market cross, featuring a tall Latin cross with an octagonal shaft that stands on an inscribed plinth. This plinth is positioned at the top of a set of three steps that encircle it. The south face of the plinth, which faces the road, displays an inscription in raised lettering that reads:
TO THE/ HONOURED/ MEMORY/ OF MEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919.
Below this, the additional dates 1939-1940 are also inscribed. The other faces of the memorial are engraved with the names of the servicemen who lost their lives, including their rank and regiment.
