Description

Hitchin's Onset is a farmhouse, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. The original core of the building is constructed of clay, with footings repaired using brick and sandstone. Later rear and end extensions are of sandstone, all whitewashed, and the roof is covered with corrugated iron over the original thatch or turf, with wooden eaves boarding. A brick chimney stack indicates the original roof line. The single-storey, three-bay cottage has flanking single-bay extensions added probably in the late 18th century, all under a common roof. The interior demonstrates cruck construction in the central room, with the other two crucks obscured by dividing walls. At the time of resurvey, the building was derelict and unoccupied, with rotten doors and windows and some parts removed. Alcock's publication, Crucks in England and Wales, features the building on page 105.
