Description
The dovecote located to the northeast of Rose Castle is a former structure dated 1700 above its entrance. It is built from large blocks of coursed red sandstone, likely sourced from the medieval castle, and features a squared plinth with flush quoins and a gable string course. The roof is made of sandstone slate, with coped gables and kneelers. The building is small and almost square, standing at 1½ storeys high. The entrance, located in the gable wall, has a chamfered surround and a lintel with the date. There are small oculi above the entrance and a small square opening in the opposite gable. Inside, the dovecote retains its complete boulins on three sides. A Parliamentary survey from 1649 mentions a dovecote, suggesting that this building may be older than its recorded date. Additionally, some references indicate that the dovecote may have served as a watch tower. It has group value with Rose Castle.
