Description
The Church of St Andrew is a Grade II* listed building, dated 1776, situated on a medieval site and restored in 1893. It features red sandstone ashlar walls set on a plinth, with string courses and dentilled triangular gable pediments, and a graduated slate roof with coped gables. The church has a three-bay nave and chancel aligned on a north-south axis, with a south bellcote tower in an Italian style. The south entrance includes three-panel double doors and a round-headed radial fanlight, flanked by engaged Tuscan columns and a triangular moulded pediment. There are round-headed windows on either side, with square windows above.
The square tower has a sundial dated 1918 that replaces a clock, featuring a commemorative inscription and corresponding round recesses on its other faces. It is topped with a lead domed cupola supported by open columns and a moulded entablature. The weather vane displays cut lettering "R.G. 1635" and "F.G. 1951", referring to the former church rebuilt by Sir Richard Graham between 1635 and 1637 and repaired by Sir Fergus Graham in 1951, hence the initials and dates.
Inside, the nave boasts large round-headed windows set in recessed round arches, a tripartite north window, and a dentilled pediment that continues as a cornice. The interior features 18th-century wooden panelled walls and a panelled plaster ceiling. A rood screen supported by Corinthian fluted columns and a reredos were created by Temple Moore, and organ cases flank the chancel arch.
