Description
This building is a field barn located approximately 5 metres north-east of Shippon. It is probably from the 17th century and has been altered. The barn is constructed of random rubble stone with quoins and features a stone slate roof, which has some corrugated sheet patching at the rear. It has a rectangular plan, likely consisting of three bays, oriented on a north-south axis and facing west.
The west front includes a square-headed wagon doorway in the centre, topped with a wooden lintel, and there are several very narrow slit breathers. Both gables are finished with copings and kneelers; the left gable wall has a blocked doorway and an owl-hole in the apex. The rear wall shows four vertical joints and has a blocked 19th-century doorway. The interior was not accessible during the inspection in November 1991, but it appears to have a principal-rafter roof. This barn forms a good visual and functional group with the shippon located approximately 5 metres south-west, together representing a fine example of an upland "outfarm."
