Description
The sundial located to the west of the castle's western gatehouse in Egremont dates back to 1762, as indicated on its north face. It has been partly restored in the 20th century and is now set on a squared rubble plinth that is approximately 3 feet high. The sundial features a monolithic stone drum with a torus, inscribed with the phrase 'Sic tranfit Gloria Mundi' on the north side. Above this drum is a monolithic stone block that incorporates a tapered octagonal finial. Each face of the block measures about 18 inches across and is incised with a vertical sundial grid, with the letters N, S, E, and W at the top of each face indicating orientation. Currently, all gnomons are missing.
