Description
Spinners Arms is a public house built in 1929-30 by Harry Redfern for the Carlisle District State Management Scheme. It features a vernacular revival style with whitewashed brick walls and some timber framing around the oriel window and porch. The building has a tiled roof and brick chimney stacks, standing two storeys tall with three bays. The projecting bay to the east has a steeply pitched roof that extends to cover the porch entrance to the bar. The porch has below-eaves weatherboard cladding, and above the oriel window, there is a gable. The steeply pitched roof includes gabled and hipped dormer windows, with a raised gable at the west end. The lounge entrance is recessed with a round-headed brick surround and an oak plank door that is iron studded. All the windows are timber-framed casements with squared leaded lights. Decorative features include a motif above the gabled dormer window and a moulded brick cornice on the chimneys. The name "Spinners Arms" comes from the spinners at the nearby Cummersdale Mill and it replaced a 19th-century pub of the same name that was located on the same site.
