Description

Farlam House Farmhouse and adjoining barns date from the 18th and 19th centuries, with the farmhouse itself marked as 1818 above the entrance. The farmhouse has stuccoed walls, a slate roof, and stone and 20th-century brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The front door is a six-panel design with a plain painted stone surround. Sash windows with glazing bars have plain painted surrounds. The adjoining barns, of two storeys and numerous bays, share a common roofline, which is slightly lower than the farmhouse roof. Entrances to the barns face the farmyard behind the house.

The barn closest to the farmhouse has walls of sandstone rubble, a plank door in a chamfered surround with a lintel dated 1751 and bearing the initials T. (&) M.B. External stone steps lead to a plank loft door, and there are two-light windows to the ground floor, with slit vents above. A barn to the left has walls of mixed sandstone rubble, raised in height during the 19th century. It features a plank door with a plain surround, dated 1748 on the lintel, also with the initials T. (&) M.B. A further sandstone barn to the left has a large round-arched entrance with a 20th-century sliding plank door, dated on the keystone 1820 and with the initials I. (&) M.B. A re-used lintel to a door on the right has a weathered inscription and the date 1703. A projecting cart entrance on the left has a round arch and a corrugated iron door. Quartz pebbles set into the farmyard cobbles nearest the farmhouse form the date 1826.
