Description

The Cottage is a house built in 1857 for Mrs. Elizabeth Key and her daughter. It is constructed of white brick, with coursed squared ironstone to the left side elevation, and has plain tile roofs with brick ridge stacks. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The central part is recessed between two wider bays, featuring a Jacobean style shaped gable above a part-glazed door set within a porch with a stone-coped gable. A Tudor-arched, chamfered brick doorway has hood moulds, and the first-floor window above has a Gothick sash window matching the hood mould. The bays to either side have bargeboards and finials. A canted bay window to the left has similar sashes and a battlemented parapet. A timber conservatory, dating to about 1870, is located to the right, featuring pointed arched lights with coloured glass spandrels, matching bargeboards, and double Gothick sash windows to the first floor left and right, also with hood moulds. Inside, the staircase hall has a staircase at the far end, lit by a tall window with a four-centred head and coloured glass. The open-well staircase has chamfered stick balusters, carved tread ends and a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail.
