Description

Church Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, with medieval origins. It is constructed of coursed ironstone and rubble, topped with a thatch roof, and features brick end and ridge stacks on stone bases. The building is a hall house with a cross-wing, standing two storeys high with an attic and a three-window range.

On the ground floor to the left, there is a three-light casement window, while above it are two two-light casements, all with timber lintels. The cross-wing has a two-light ovolo scone mullion window on the ground floor with a hood mould, and three-light casements on the first and attic floors, also with timber lintels. The right side of the house has a blocked door to the right of centre and two-light casement windows with timber lintels. The entrance is located on the left side, featuring a 20th-century door. The left end has quoins and a stone-coped gable.

Inside, the farmhouse contains ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a bread oven. In the roof of the main range facing the street, there are substantial remains of a medieval hall roof, including a base cruck truss cut off just below eaves level and one bay of what is presumed to be a two-bay open hall. This structure is believed to be the only clear example of base cruck construction in the county.
