Entrance Gateway North West Of Manfield Orthopaedic Hospital

The entrance gateway located northwest of Manfield Orthopaedic Hospital was built between 1899 and 1902 by Charles Dorman for James Manfield, a shoe manufacturer from Northampton. Constructed from limestone, ironstone, and wrought iron, the gateway features a pair of carriageway piers along with flanking footway piers. These are accompanied by quadrant walls that have similar terminal piers. The piers are adorned with cornices, caps, and large ball finials. The quadrant walls slope up to a pair of piers topped with ball finials, with railings in between. The flanking walls include lower end piers that also have ball finials, and the walls are topped with moulded stone coping. The carriageway gates are currently missing, but the footways are fitted with ornate wrought iron gates.
