Description
The Church of St Matthew, built between 1891 and 1894 by Matthew Holding, is a large and tall structure designed in a style reminiscent of the 13th century. It is constructed of squared rubble and ashlar, topped with a Welsh slated roof. The church features transepts, an apsed chancel, and a northwest tower with a spire. Inside, there is a vaulted chancel and a timber roof in the nave, supported by trusses on stone arches with lightly pierced spandrels. The church contains notable stained glass that dates to around the same time as its construction. In the north transept, there is a stone sculpture of the Madonna and Child created by Henry Moore in 1944, and in the south transept, there is a painting of the Crucifixion by Graham Sutherland from 1946.
