Description

Packhorse Bridge is a 17th century structure, possibly with earlier origins, that has been restored with much of its parapet rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of dressed ironstone and features two pointed arches. There is a central pier with a large cutwater on the upstream side and a stone tiled buttress on the downstream side. Below the parapets, there is a string course, which has been largely renewed. The string course on the downstream side is inscribed with the initials TH 1740 and WA 1722, which may indicate graffiti or repair dates. The string course is missing over the left arch on the upstream side.
