Description
The General Hospital, specifically the front central block, dates back to 1793 and features 19th century and modern wings. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, with a ground floor entablature, a second floor band, and a parapet topped with a central pediment that includes a round window in the tympanum. The sides of the building are recessed and feature a pattern of five, three, and five sash windows set in reveals. The ground floor windows are arched and adorned with keystones, positioned between Roman Doric pilasters.
The central entrance is marked by a tetrastyle Roman Doric porch, which has an arched window above flanked by attached columns and an archivolt. There is a similar arched window on the second floor with short columns, and the first and second floor windows are framed by eared architraves, with pediments above the first floor windows. The 19th century projecting end wings are designed in a generally similar style, featuring entablatures at the eaves level but lacking parapets.
