Description
This is a late 18th-century house, once a farmhouse, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is built of rendered brick with a wood shingle roof and has rendered brick end stacks. The house has two storeys and an attic, and a three-window front. The layout is based on three rooms. A central plank door, with a stop-chamfered wood lintel, leads into the house. There are five-light casement windows on the ground floor to the left and right, with wood lintels. First-floor windows include old three-light casements to the left and right, and a similar two-light casement in the centre, all with stop-chamfered wood lintels. The lintels to the three-light casements on the first floor, and to the ground floor left, feature wood "keyblocks". Attached to the left is a single-storey former outbuilding which originally comprised a two-bay cart shed with a granary above, and a small single-storey weigh-house to the right, with a lean-to slate roof. Inside, the house features stop-chamfered spine beams, an open fireplace with a bressumer, and old quarry tile floors. The property is situated near the Grand Union Canal and is believed to have also served as a public house associated with the nearby wharf. A weighbridge, dated 1884 and manufactured by Pooleys of Liverpool, remains in place.
