Description
This is a row of six cottages located on Main Street, built in 1908 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Ivor Guest, Lord Wimborne. The cottages feature a coursed ironstone and limestone rubble plinth, with upper walls made of brick and pebbledash, and are topped with a thatched roof and brick stacks. The design has a symmetrical plan with two wings that project from the front.
The central section is two storeys tall, with an attic and consists of nine bays. The two-bay wings have pyramid-shaped hipped roofs that slope down to the lintels of the ground floor windows, and they feature large stacks at the apex. The outer bays maintain a similar low roof line. A central passageway is marked by a moulded stone four-centred arch, which has an ornamental date plaque above it.
All doorways and windows are framed with pebbledash surrounds. The doorways in the central block are located in the third bay from both the left and right, featuring flat timber hoods and ribbed plank doors. The doorways on the left and right sides of the flanking wings have half-glazed doors. Most windows are 2-light casements, except for the outer bays, which have canted bay windows. The central block has four half-dormers, while the flanking wings have roof dormers. Attic windows are present in the end cottages on the side walls, and the roof has a half-hipped design.
The interior was not inspected, but in 1913, each cottage was noted to have a kitchen, scullery, parlour, and three bedrooms, as recorded by L. Weaver in "Houses and Gardens by E.L. Lutyens."
