Description

Elmtree House is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble banded with limestone and features a slate roof with brick end and ridge stacks. It has a 3-unit through-passage plan and is two stories high with a three-window range.

The front has a 20th-century door located to the right of center, which is topped by a wood lintel. There are 20th-century casement windows on both the ground and first floors, arranged in one, two, three, and four lights, all featuring wood lintels. To the left, there is a two-light basement window with a double-chamfered stone surround, quoins, and a stone-coped gable with kneelers on the right. The roof was raised in the 19th century using coursed squared ironstone and limestone.

Inside, the house has ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams and some original ogee-stop-chamfered joists. There is an open fireplace that features an ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer, which is carved with a stylized plant in the center. A wall painting includes an inscription from Psalm 143: "Teach mee to doe thy will for thou art/God: let thy good spirit leade me into/Righteousness." Additionally, there is a fitted cupboard with a round-arched head, shaped shelves, a Greek key frieze, and a dentilled cornice. The property also includes a stone cellar.
