Description

Carey Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is built of regularly coursed lias stone and has a plain tiled roof added in the 20th century. The cottage has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high, featuring a two-window range of casements with leaded lights. The first-floor windows are likely from the 18th century and have wooden lintels. There are brick stacks at the ridge and end of the building, and a 20th-century entrance located at the rear.

An inscribed tablet between the first-floor windows commemorates William Carey, who lived in the cottage from 1783 to 1789. Carey was a shoemaker, schoolmaster, preacher, scholar, and missionary pioneer. The tablet notes that it was here he conceived and developed significant missionary ideas that impacted India and inspired global movements. He served the Baptist church in the village for over four years. Born on August 17, 1761, in Paulespury, he died on June 9, 1834, and is buried in Serampore, India. The inscription concludes with the phrase, "Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God. He being dead yet speaketh."
