Description
Adams Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located on the west side of Flore Kings Lane. The building is constructed from ironstone rubble, brick, and cob, with whitewashed walls and brick end and ridge stacks. It has a three-unit plan and a two-storey, two-window front. A plank door with an overlight and a straight hood supported by brackets is located to the right of centre, alongside a cross window to the right and a smaller square window to the far right. Two-light casements are situated to the left of the door, each with its own timber lintel. The central raised first floor section features an eyebrow dormer with a two-light sliding casement to the left and a 20th-century window to the right. Inside, notable features include chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and an old plank door with HL hinges. A portion of the building was previously used as a meeting house, and the property was held in trust from 1678. The use as a meeting house ceased before 1817, and the trust dissolved in the mid-18th century. Members of the Adams family served as trustees during the mid-18th century and are believed to be related to U.S. President John Quincy Adams.
