Description

The Great Houghton War Memorial is located in a small garden across the road from the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mary the Virgin. The garden is situated at the west end of The Cross, an open space in the village that provides views of the memorial from all sides except the north. The memorial is positioned on a raised area, accessible by six steps, and is said to mark the spot of a tree where the servicemen commemorated in the First World War played as children.

Standing approximately 6 meters tall, the memorial is made of sandstone and features a cross with a foliate wheel-head. This cross is mounted on a square shaft, which rises from a square plinth that sits on a three-stage octagonal base. The inscriptions on the plinth are carved but have become heavily eroded in places.

On the west face, the inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF GREAT HOUGHTON WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 –1919./ WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." The north face lists six names, while the west face also lists six names. Surrounding the base of the plinth is the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO/ [largely illegible] MAN THAN THIS THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS/] LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
