Description
Foscote House is a farmhouse built around 1840, constructed from coursed squared ironstone with hipped slate roofs and brick internal stacks. The building is designed in a U-shape and is two stories tall, featuring a three-window range. The central entrance has a double-leaf, part-glazed door set in a limestone surround, which includes panelled reveals, plain pilasters, a simple entablature, and a pediment above. The ground and first floors have 16-pane sash windows, each with stone sills and segmental-arched heads. The central bay projects forward and is topped with a pedimental gable that has a string course at its base. The eaves are deep and projecting. At the rear, there are two lower symmetrical wings, with the left wing containing a brewhouse and dairy. Inside, there is an inner staircase hall featuring an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a steeply ramped, wreathed handrail that leads to the first-floor landing hall. The interior also includes original stone and marble chimneypieces. Foscote House is one of several model farms built for the 4th Duke of Grafton between 1839 and 1844.
