Description

Salcey Lawn is a country house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a hipped slate roof and brick internal stacks. The house has a double-depth plan, is two storeys high, and includes a basement and attic, with a five-window range.

The central entrance has a 20th-century glazed door that is accessed by five moulded stone steps leading from a stone terrace in front of the basement. The ground floor has 18-pane sash windows, while the first floor features 12-pane sashes, all with wooden lintels. The basement includes two-light casement windows, also with wooden lintels, and there are three roof dormers. The building is accented with ironstone quoins and bracketed wooden eaves, and there is a central door at the rear at basement level.

Inside, the house boasts two Tudor-arched stone fireplaces with ornamental carved spandrels and strapwork, one of which has an oak surround and overmantel with perspective panels and terms. A dog-leg staircase leads from the ground floor to the attic, featuring square newel posts and barley sugar balusters. The upper rooms have a panelled dado and some fielded panelling. The basement contains a former kitchen with a large blocked open fireplace that has a massive bressumer and an ogee-stop-chamfered spine beam, as well as a brick tunnel-vaulted wine cellar. Large 18th-century additions to the rear have been demolished. Salcey Lawn was formerly the residence of a younger branch of the Fitzroy family.
