Description
The Hartwell War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is located close to the south door of the church of St John the Baptist, which is listed as Grade II*. The memorial features a limestone cross that stands approximately 3 meters high, with a head designed in the St James pattern. This cross is mounted on an octagonal shaft that rises from a short, square plinth, which is set on a one-stage octagonal base. Slate panels are embedded in the plinth. One panel is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR GOD AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." Two additional panels list the names of those who fell in the First World War, while a fourth panel, styled similarly, records the names of those who died in the Second World War.
