Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in the late 18th century and altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick with limestone dressings, topped with a slate roof and featuring brick end stacks. The building has a three-unit plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a five-window range. The central bay projects forward and contains a part-glazed door with a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a wood surround with a broken pediment. The ground and first floors have sash windows with segmental-arched heads and keyblocks, except for a late 19th-century bay window located at the far left of the ground floor. The exterior includes a stone plinth, a storey band, alternate quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers. There are three gabled roof dormers. The building has 19th-century extensions on the right and at the rear, as well as a lower two-storey wing at the rear left. Inside, there is a stone-flagged hall, an open-well staircase with a steeply ramped and wreathed handrail and stick balusters, and a depressed arched sideboard niche in the Dining Room. The property also features a stone cellar. A plain stone-coped parapet and pediment that once adorned the central bay were removed around 1950.
