Description

The Old House, located on Flore High Street, consists of a house and an attached cottage, dated 1681 and 1697. The building is constructed of coursed squared ironstone with a thatched roof and features brick end and ridge stacks. It has two storeys and an attic, with a six-window range. The cottage, No. 123, includes a four-unit lobby entry and a four-panel part-glazed door positioned to the right of the centre, which is framed by an elaborate early 19th-century cast iron porch with an ogee lead roof. Above the door is a datestone inscribed G/TM/1697, and there is a small rectangular window on the first floor above it. The ground and first floors have three-light casement windows, all of which are topped with timber lintels. To the left of the door, there is an additional inserted 20th-century door between two windows. The right end features a stone-coped gable with a large buttress and a datestone inscribed 1681/G/TM. The masonry on the right end bay is made of coursed rubble with bands of squared stone, while the left end bay is an addition made of finer squared stone to the left of a straight joint. At the rear, there is a canted projection that was originally a stair turret, now used as a store, with small square windows that have stop-chamfered stone lintels. No. 121, likely also from the late 17th century, has a two-unit plan and resembles a cross wing with its gable end facing the street, though it was probably originally a detached structure. This section is partially rendered with a brick gable, 20th-century windows, and a small roof dormer. Inside No. 123, there are stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer. No. 121 features ogee stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a cambered stop-chamfered bressumer.
