Description

The Orchard is a cottage dating from the early 18th century. It's constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with a thatched roof, featuring brick ridge stacks, one built on a stone base. The original design comprised a three-room through-passage plan. The cottage is one storey high with an attic, and originally had a five-window front facing the garden. A plank door is located to the right, now protected by a 20th-century gabled porch. The windows are casements, varying in size with one, two, or three lights, and all have timber lintels. Two eyebrow dormers, each with a two-light window, light the attic. A bay to the left is a later addition, evidenced by a straight joint in the stonework. A single-window addition from the 20th century adjoins the right side of the front door. The rear of the property features a three-light stone mullion window and a blocked door. Quoins are present. Inside, the cottage retains an open fireplace and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
