Description
The Church of St. James is a Grade II listed building located in Upper Stowe, built in 1855 by P.C. Hardwick. It is constructed from coursed dressed ironstone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave, chancel, vestry, and a north-west porch, all designed in the Early English style. The chancel consists of one bay and includes an east window with five lancets under a hood mould. The vestry has a timbered appearance with a single lancet window on the north side of the chancel. The four-bay nave is adorned with both single and coupled lancet windows. A gabled west porch is set on low stone walls, and the west window has three lancets under a hood mould. The church is supported by angle buttresses on the east and west sides, features stone coped gables, and has a gabled west bellcote that contains one bell within an open pointed arch. Inside, the chancel boasts a painted stone reredos, a painted roof, stencilled window splays, and an encaustic tile floor. The east and south-east windows contain 19th-century stained glass.
