Description

The Hawking Tower is a lodge built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed from squared and coursed lias with ashlar dressings. The tower consists of three stages. There is a wide stone flight leading to a blocked entrance featuring an ogee head in the second stage. The second and third stages have ogee-headed window openings. At the top, there is a castellated parapet with pinnacles and a wrought iron weather vane. On the left side, there is a single ashlar gate pier that has panel decoration. This folly was built by the Second Earl of Strafford and Wentworth and is mentioned in a letter from Horace Walpole in 1756.
