Description

The South Lodges and gateways to Easton Neston House, located on Northampton Road, were built between 1822 and 1823 by John Raffield for the 3rd Earl of Pomfret. These structures are made of limestone ashlar and feature slate roofs, with a brick ridge stack on the left lodge and a stone ridge stack on the right lodge. The lodges are adorned with cast-iron gates that have spear finials, and the rusticated stone gatepiers display alternating bands of vermiculation. Each pier has a plain plinth, a frieze with horizontal oval paterae, and a moulded cornice topped with urns featuring ball finials. The piers connect to the lodges on either side with stone-coped walls, each containing a round-arched pedestrian gateway and a cast-iron gate with spear finials. The small, single-storey lodges have pedimented pavilions with a Venetian window set in a shallow round-arched recess, a plinth, an impost band, and upright oval paterae flanking the window recess, which includes a keyblock and moulded stone eaves. The inner side elevations, which face the drive, feature a sash window and a four-panel door within a screen wall, both with stone lintels, as well as a pair of upright oval vermiculated panels above. Lean-to extensions are present on the outer sides.
