Description

Milton House and Manor Cottage are a small country house, originally a single dwelling, now divided into two separate residences. The main part of the house was built in the early to mid-18th century and extended in 1777, with further alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior is constructed of ironstone ashlar, with hipped slate roofs and stone internal stacks. The building follows a double-depth plan with two main floors and an attic. The facade has a five-window arrangement. The central entrance features a four-panel door surmounted by a fanlight and flanked by Doric columns that support sections of the entablature and an open pediment, approached by two stone steps. It has 12-pane sash windows to both ground and first floors, each with flat-arched heads and keyblocks. Other external details include a plinth, chamfered quoins, a storey band, moulded stone eaves, and three segmental-gabled dormers in the roof. To the rear, on the right, is a wing dated 1777 (Manor Cottage) with a gabled plain-tile roof and features a six-panel door with fanlight and a moulded wooden surround, in addition to 12-pane sashes on both floors. Inside, the hall is paved with chequered stone. The inner staircase hall contains an open-well staircase with a panelled dado, carved tread ends, stick balusters, a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail. Most rooms have moulded plaster cornices. Original eared wooden chimney pieces are present on the upper floor, alongside a similar stone example.
