Description

A row of four cottages located in Spring Lane, Alderton; they date to the mid to late 17th century and have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a thatched roof and brick ridge stacks. They are arranged as one storey and attic, with an 8-window range. Originally, they likely comprised two cottages. Number 1, on the left, has a plank door, Number 2 a partly glazed plank door, and Numbers 3 and 4 a 20th-century door. All doors have wooden lintels, with those of Numbers 1 and 2 extending over the adjacent windows. The windows are mostly 2-light casements with wooden lintels, except for the 3-light casements on the right of the doors to Numbers 3 and 4. Dormers with windows in the attic are eyebrow shaped. The interior of Number 3 features two open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers, an ogee-stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, other chamfered spine beams, old tile floors, and clasped principals with tiles and collars. Some of the cottages have been combined into larger dwellings.
