Description

This building is a canal warehouse located north of Blisworth Mill, dating from the early 19th century and constructed for the Grand Junction, later known as the Union Canal Company. It is made of red brick in English garden wall bond and features a low-pitched Welsh slate half-hipped roof with lead roll hips and ridge. The roof on the east front extends down over deep eaves, creating a canopy over the canal, which is supported by cantilevered timber ties. The warehouse has a rectangular plan with a loading door facing the canal.

The exterior is single-storey, and the east front is mostly blind, except for a wide loading doorway to the right of the center, which has a 20th-century door, and a small 20th-century window to the right. At the rear, there is a stone wing with a gable end facing Gayton Road. Inside, the roof features tie beams with king-posts and struts.

The Grand Junction Canal was authorized in 1793 to create a shorter route between London and the Midlands, designed by engineers James Barnes and William Jessop. Due to challenges in constructing the Blisworth tunnel, which is the longest still in use, a toll road was established in 1797 over Blisworth Hill, later replaced in 1800 by a double-track horse tramroad built by Benjamin Outram. This warehouse at Blisworth wharf may have been constructed in connection with the tunnel and tramroad.
