Description

This is a cottage dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with an old tile roof and brick end stacks. Originally a two-unit plan building, it has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. The central entrance has a plank door set within a moulded timber surround, topped by a straight hood supported on brackets. The ground floor windows are two-light casements with timber lintels, while those on the first floor have flat brick arches. A stone sundial sits between the central and left first-floor windows, and there is a moulded brick cornice. Inside, there’s an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. An upper room contains a fitted cupboard with fielded panelled doors and H hinges. The attic walls bear a painted inscription from Psalm 133: “I laid me down and slept, and rose up again, for the Lord sustained me." A one-storey-and-attic stone extension with a bark door and slate roof adjoins the left side. The cottage was formerly the local Poor House.
