Description

Hoperidge Cottage is a house that dates from the mid to late 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, which is painted, and features a shingle roof along with brick end and ridge stacks, the latter having a stone base. The house has a 4-unit plan and is two stories high with a range of five windows. A 20th-century door is located to the right of the center, set within a 20th-century porch, while the ground and first floors have 2-light casement windows, except for a 3-light casement window to the left of center on the ground floor. There is a blocked door to the right of the current door, also with a wood lintel. The eaves have been raised in brick following the removal of thatch, and the windows were originally in eyebrow dormers. The ridge stack is likely the former left end stack of the original 17th-century 2-unit plan house, with the section to the left of the stack being an 18th-century addition. Inside, there are chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a cambered bar-stop-chamfered bressumer, along with another open fireplace featuring a chamfered bressumer. The roof over the earlier part of the house is largely original, consisting of collar trusses and two tiers of purlins. The house has previously been divided into three cottages.
