Description
Bridge Number 53 is a late 18th-century structure that was doubled in 1835, located over the Grand Union Canal in Stoke Bruerne. It is built of coursed squared limestone and features red brick arches along with a brick parapet on the eastern half. The bridge has a double-span design with elliptical arches; the older, western half has a narrower span and is slightly lower than the other half. The bridge is wide at both ends but narrows and curves outward at the center, where the two halves meet in the form of a cutwater. There is a string course at the base of the parapet that dips in the middle. The channel beneath the western span is currently not in use.
