Description
No. 31 Brackley Road is a lodge built in the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone and ashlar, topped with a plain tile roof featuring ornamental ridge tiles and brick end stacks. The lodge has a two-unit plan and consists of one storey, a basement or cellar, and an attic.
The central entrance features a 20th-century door set in a moulded wood surround, which has a flat-arched head and a straight hood supported by carved stone brackets. This door is flanked by 12-pane sash windows, also with flat-arched heads. The building has a plinth and wide pilaster strips at the corners, along with blank panels above the door and windows. There are two gabled dormers on the roof, and the basement has exterior access on the right side.
This lodge is one of a pair that once served a drive leading south to Stowe, the former seat of the Dukes of Buckingham.
