Description
Winterhills is a former hunting lodge dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone that has been whitewashed, with some areas featuring timber framing and rendering. The building has hipped slate roofs and brick lateral stacks. It has a tripartite composition with a three-unit plan, consisting of two-storey wings on either side of a central section that is also two storeys tall with an attic. The facade features a one-window range, with a central part-glazed door set in a moulded wood surround beneath a timber lintel, all within a timber porch. Above, there are three-light casement windows with segmental heads on the first floor, and a two-light leaded casement window in the attic. At the rear, there is a timber canted bay window and a single-storey kitchen extension. Inside, the lodge has a blocked open fireplace with a bread oven and retains its original roof structure. The building is located within the former area of Whittlewood Forest and is said to have been associated with deer-hunting.
