Description

Pitsford Hall is a country house that has been converted into a convent school. It was built in the late 18th century by John Johnson. The structure features squared coursed lias with ashlar dressings and has a roof made of lead and slate. The building has a double-depth plan with pavilions.

On the north front, the house has three storeys and a seven-window range of sashes and casements with glazing bars and flat arched heads. The central five bays project forward and include canted bays. There is a central two-storey porch with a belvedere above, both of which were added in the early 20th century, along with the third floor. The shallow pitched roof is not visible. The left pavilion has two storeys with an attic and a three-window range of casements, featuring a triple arcade at the ground floor, a gabled roof with a moulded pediment, and a central oculus. The right pavilion has been replaced by a 20th-century extension.

The south front is similar to the north front and includes a moulded wood doorcase with columns and a pediment. Inside, there is a fine 18th-century staircase to the right of the entrance, which has carved tread ends and a wrought iron balustrade. The entrance hall features screens with detached columns, and there is a bolection moulded fire surround in the entrance hall and in the room to the right of the staircase. The ceilings in the entrance hall and two rooms to the right of the entrance have oval centres with fruit and flower mouldings and moulded cornices. The original 18th-century house has been altered with the addition of a further storey to both the north and south fronts in the early 20th century.
