Description

Hillside is a cottage dating from 1658, with alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone with a thatched roof and red brick end stacks. The cottage has a two-unit plan and is arranged over two floors, with a two-window front. A basement or cellar door is located to the right of the centre, featuring a plank door, a pegged wood surround, and a wood lintel. The ground floor has a single-light casement window on the left, a two-light casement on the right, and a small single-light window on the left of the first floor, all with wood lintels. A datestone is positioned in the centre of the first floor, inscribed with the date 1658 and initials IA. Ironstone and limestone quoins are present. The plinth is chamfered on the street elevation. The rear elevation features three-light casement windows with wood lintels. A two-storey extension was added to the left in the 20th century. Inside, the cottage has an ogee-stop-chamfered spine beam, a chamfered spine beam, and an open fireplace with a cambered stop-chamfered bressumer.
