Description

A K6 telephone kiosk, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and made by various contractors, stands on a wide grass verge in Litchborough. The kiosk is constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, and features applied crowns on the top panels rather than perforated ones. Rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" are positioned beneath the shallow curved roof. Modern internal equipment has been installed. While currently not in good condition, with flaking red paint and rust, the kiosk remains unaltered and retains its original configuration.

The K6 design represents a milestone in 20th-century industrial design, developed by Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It evolved from his earlier, highly successful K2 telephone kiosk with its Neo-classical inspiration, offering a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective design. This kiosk has a strong visual relationship with three other listed buildings: the medieval grade II* listed church of St Martin, the grade II listed Litchborough Farmhouse and attached wall (mid-18th century), and the grade II listed Old Red Lion Public House (late 17th century). Together, the church tower, farmhouse, pub, and kiosk form a single visual composition when viewed from the east. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, with many replaced by more basic designs in the 1960s, but they remain an iconic feature of the British streetscape.
