Description
Peggotty's Restaurant is a building that was originally an inn, dating from the 17th century. It was remodeled and enlarged in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is built of coursed squared ironstone, with the sides rendered, and features a hipped slate roof and a brick lateral stack. It has a double-depth plan and is two stories high with a two-window range.
The central entrance consists of a black door with a wooden lintel, flanked by canted bay windows. The first floor has 20th-century windows that replaced the original 16-pane sashes, featuring flat-arched heads. The right side elevation has a mix of sash and 2- and 3-light casement windows, along with pargetting that depicts a huntsman in 17th-century attire with a harehound on a leash and a hare being chased by a hound. There are doors on the left and right side elevations, each with straight hoods supported by brackets. The building has 20th-century extensions to the right and rear.
Inside, there are chamfered spine beams and a stone cellar. The building is noted in the Buildings of England as being dated 1637.
