Description

Old Grammar School House is a grammar school that has been converted into a house, dating from 1671 as noted on a sundial. The building is constructed of squared uncoursed limestone with ironstone quoins and features a stone tile roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with stone chimneys. It has an L-plan layout, comprising two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a total of seven bays.

The main entrance is located in the second bay from the left and features a stone doorway with a 4-centred arch and a square hood that has lozenge-shaped stops, leading to a six-panel door. There is a similar doorway, which is blocked, in the third bay from the right. The left bay on both the ground and first floors has modern three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows, while the other windows are two-light stone mullions, some of which have been renewed, all with a continuous hood on both floors. A stone sundial is located in the third bay from the right on the first floor.

At the rear, there is a 17th-century gabled wing that is one bay wide and two storeys tall, featuring two-light stone mullioned windows with square hoods. Inside, the building has moulded beams and stone square-headed doorways, along with a 17th-century stone fireplace in the hall that has a 4-centred arch and a moulded entablature.
