Description

Priory Cottage is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It features a datestone from 1608 and includes 19th-century additions. The building is constructed from squared coursed ironstone and has 20th-century plain-tile and slate roofs. Originally, it likely had a three-unit plan and is two storeys high with an attic. The front has a four-window range with narrow, three-storey projecting gables on both the left and right sides. There are three-light stone mullion windows and one large two-light stone-mullion window in the centre of the ground floor. Each gable has a 20th-century door beneath a wooden lintel. The gables have ashlar parapets and kneelers, and there is a central 20th-century roof dormer along with brick stacks at the ridge.

To the left, there is a 19th-century one-bay extension with a projecting cross wing that has two 19th-century two-light stone-mullion windows. The rear elevation facing Church Street also has a four-window range, featuring sash, casement, and three-light stone-mullion windows. There is a six-panelled part-glazed door under a wooden lintel on the left and a 20th-century door on the right. A stack at the eaves rises from an irregular gable, which includes the datestone, and the centre of the main front has a partially legible inscribed slate tablet. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain a wooden spiral stair. The building was originally believed to be the schoolmaster's house and dormitories for the adjacent Grammar School, which is now the Church Hall.
